Marsalis Brasilianos in Lisbon
Fri, 26 Jun 2009 03:20:00 +0100Branford Marsalis (who's in Alberta this weekend - in Calgary tomorrow and Edmonton on Sunday - my birthday, hint, hint) is reprising his very successful 2008 Marsalis Brasilianos tour in Europe. He's in Lisbon on July 16th, performing with the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa. I'm assuming the program will include the Fantasia for Saxophone and Orchestra, which Marsalis has pretty much made his own after 27 performances during his US tour.... (Read complete news)
Iran: Cracks in the Wall?
Fri, 26 Jun 2009 01:06:00 +0100It is well known that there are rifts in the Iranian leadership. While no one in power there loves the US or Israel, there are some who want to take some of the rough edges off of Ahmadinejad's rule. The latest reports from Press TV, a news agency that broadcasts from Iran hint at a new stage in the violence. According to Press TV, eight members of the hated Basij militia were killed in a recent demonstration. Press TV reports as follows. "Twenty people including, eight Basij members, have been killed during the post-election unrest in Tehran, Iranian officials say. All the Basij members were killed by gunfire, indicating that there were gunmen fomenting unrest among protesters, the officials said. The volunteer Basij forces were among the main targets of the rioters during the recent protests in Tehran. Iranian police have arrested a rioter who attacked an unarmed Basiji member during the post-election protests in Tehran. " http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=98984§ionid=351020101 How were the Basij members killed? Are there factions beside the Basijis who are now armed? For the past few days, it looked like they had the upper hand with armed strength. Could the balance of power be changing? In another story on Press TV, the Iran government seems to be embarassed by reports of attacks upon Teheran's main university. A government spokesman promised to seek and punish the attackers. Press TV reports as follows. "Iran's Minister of Science, Research and Technology says that punishment will be meted out to those who recently attacked a number of Iranian universities. Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi said Thursday that a fact-finding commission had been formed to investigate the violent attacks, which left many students seriously wounded and hospitalized. The attacks also led to the destruction of the students' private properties and university equipment. The violent attacks were carried out after the announcement of the disputed June 12 election results by unidentified men, causing an outrage among academics, student communities and the public." Is the government serious? Will they really find the attackers? One thing is sure. They are losing not only hearts and minds but men as well. In another development, a religious leader named Ayatollah Makarem appears to be calling for reconciliation. In the following Press TV coverage, he seems to hint at some sort of compromise. Senior cleric Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi has called for Iran's presidential election dispute to be settled through "national conciliation". "Extremely bitter events have occurred in the days following the magnificent 10th [presidential] election, and certain adventurists took advantage of the disputes between the honorable candidates," Grand Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi said in a statement published on his website on Thursday. The octogenarian professor of theology said that the recent events "have caused deep regret and sorrow in all Iranians loyal to the Islamic establishment and the revolution,... and have gladdened the enemy." "Under these circumstances, where both our friends and enemies are observing the situation in our country, it is incumbent upon us to fully maintain calm and not to allow adventurists to disturb public order and destroy public and private property, and, as... Mahler, Freudian pioneer, Salonen's psychologically astute Mahler 7th
Sat, 13 Jun 2009 15:31:00 +0100Mahler’s Seventh Symphony doesn’t quite fit in with the usual Mahler fascination with metaphysics, and is something of a Cinderella compared with blockbusters like the 5th,, 6th, 8th and 9th symphonies. Yet it has unique charms. Clues to performance are embedded in the orchestration, so it’s a test of any conductor to hear how he understands them as he builds an interpretation. Esa-Pekka Salonen produced an original and valid approach with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. His Mahler 7th doesn’t rely on big flashy effects to impress the audience. Instead he’s subtle, as befits a piece with such emphasis on night and shadows. At night, images are blurred, details only briefly perceptible, hidden by darkness. What we hear is elusive, disguised. We need to be alert to subtle hints of what is not revealed. The First movement starts conventionally enough with brass fanfares, often interpreted as a kind of funeral march. But is it anything so concrete? Mahler writes lots of military processions, but here Salonen indicates that it’s no ordinary, daylight march but a progression into another mode of being, into sleep, into the world of dreams. Gradually the ensemble fades and solo violin emerges, sweetly poignant. It’s as if the hustle and bustle of daily reality has gone, and we’re somewhere more private and intimate. Thus, we flowed gently into _Nachtmusik 1_, the first of the two movements where hushed sounds evoke mystery. Alma Mahler said that the composer thought of Eichendorff while writing,... Single Review: "Tic Toc" Ciara
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 21:45:00 +0100I am starting to feel bad for CiCi, but she is not doing herself any favors by outright refusing to take a hint (...any hint...). She has a new single (aka old track that didnt make the album cut) out now entitled, "Tic Toc", which is similar to some of the songs you've never heard from her album that you didnt buy. Its a somewhat sexy, laid back mid-tempo track that is not horrible, its just not... (Read complete news)

Sat, 30 May 2009 20:00:00 +0100Suckers - Easy Chairs This four piece band out of Brooklyn is piloted by solo artist Quinn Walker - much admired by the indie inner circle - but still unfamiliar to many. Now that he’s teamed up with an extremely talented group of guys the ascent to stardom has begun since the release of their self-titled EP in April. This short four track release is rich with Bowie-esque vocals and killer instrumentals that pull from a wide range of influence. Check out the mind-warping video for “Easy Chairs” below! Myspace... 20 years….
Sun, 24 May 2009 22:14:00 +0100Wow, it doesn’t seem possible. 20 Years ago today I saw Metallica on their first headlining tour in support of the …And Justice For All album. I was beyond lucky, that in the lottery system the venue had in place the day the tickets went on sale, while we were all standing line, to be able to purchase front row tickets. It was the first front row concert experience. Not to mention at the time Metallica ruled MY world. They were unequivocally my favorite band. The venue had foolishly set up folding metal chairs on the floor. The band wasn’t... (Read complete news)
Wasted Sanctuary
Wed, 06 May 2009 13:47:00 +0100Last week, I participated in a horn choir at a college not far from Small Town. I've already written about that experience, but I neglected to show you pictures. My horn lessons are from 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoons, and since rehearsal for the choir didn't begin until 5:30, I had some time to wander and see things I normally don't see. When I go to my lessons, I usually try to get in and get out unnoticed by walking in a straight line through the hallway—I go to the performing arts building, and there are always college-age kids sitting...
