The way is was in the basement..........
Fri, 03 Jul 2009 18:55:00 +0100Ok, the next few posts I'm going to make are all about another group I was really into in the early 90s'. If you have followed the Sludge Swamp since it's beginning, you know I take you on lots of side trips into my musical tastes. I was really into early punk, and anything anti-establishment, and really got into grunge as it formed. I just hung out with a lot of bands trying to make it happen, lots of drugs, and lots of anger towards corporate greed, and other issues. As you all know, I really liked Warrior Soul, because of their lyrics and crusty punk/metal sound. Well, another band I followed from their humble beginnings was Amen. They formed in 93 or 94, and had a great punk/metal vibe going. Casey Chaos, their lead singer and only member who has remained through the revolving door of musicians in the band, had a history in singing rebellious music. I really like their early material, and only seldom listen to any of the later material. Anyways, here we go... (if you don't like my side-noodling, you can skip this post and check out any of the other 5000+ albums on the Sludge Swamp and find something you do like!)...... "To fully understand where We Have Come for Your Parents came from, you should hear Amen's self-titled Roadrunner debut. Amen (with four extra tracks from the spiky Whores of Hollywood EP as a sweetener to those who already own it), is full of anger, misanthropy, and self-disgust. Casey Chaos screeches like he's being burned alive on "Down Human," while the banks of guitars race him to the end. There's nothing clean and polished here; you can hear things breaking and cracking under the pressure, be they people (including Casey himself, who screams "Punish me!" like he really means it on "Drive") or equipment. This is a perfect introduction to an exciting band." (review from Emma Johnston). Check em' out here: Amen. Amen - Self Titled (Remastered): ... (Read complete news)
5 for the weekend 1979
Fri, 03 Jul 2009 12:43:00 +0100WATERMELON IN EASTER HAY (FRANK ZAPPA 'JOE'S GARAGE') Frank released an incredible four albums in 1979, I think! This marks a very purple patch for the genius of Frank. This is definitely my very favourite album ever made. My number one. And it has been since I first got immersed in it many years ago. Erm… it's quite deep but basically by Watermelon Joe is pretty depressed and "imagines his last imaginary guitar solo". Frank pulls one of the most chilling pieces you'll ever hear out of his hat closing out the story in true style. This is just genius. RAT TOMAGO (FRANK ZAPPA 'SHEIK YERBOUTI') Welcome to goosebump city!! This is a live solo outtake from the classic Frank tune The Torture Never Stops off the 76 album Zoot Allures. The band absolutely rock here, Bozzio really knew how to work with Frank in the solo sections and they just rip it up for 5 gloriously spellbinding minutes. There's not a single chord change in the whole thing and yet it's totally captivating start to finish. The album closes with Yo Mama… one of the finest chilling moments ever. I get teary eyed every time I hear that too. SOMEBODY GET ME A DOCTOR (VAN HALEN 'II') Personally, I have grown to like this album more than the first Van Halen record. The songs are better, the band is sloppier, the egos are bigger but I dunno… it just has so much character! Spanish Fly proved Edward could fret and tap without all that high gain but for me it's the amazing riff on Somebody Get Me a Doctor that did it. This was one riff I absolutely had to know. COMFORTABLY NUMB (PINK FLOYD 'THE WALL') Some of you will be thinking "about time!!" for the Floyd. I liked Wish You Were Here and Animals but in terms of inspiring guitar it has to be The Wall where it hits you in the chest. The solos on Numb are just sublime… without these a whole lot of stuff would never have happened!! GIRLS GOT RHYTHM (AC/DC 'HIGHWAY TO HELL') Awwww man I miss the Bon Scott DC! It's always right on the edge… you expect the band to fall over with the excitement of it all at any moment. I couldn't really decide which track on this album to pick so settled on this track which is always so much fun and possibly one the best rock songs ever recorded! There we are. 1979. There were at least another 10 recordings that didn't make it. I hope you'll check out some of these if you're not familiar with them. They really have been life changing for me and still inspire the hell out of me!! It's been a joy to listen to these again to write this post. … Apology: OK, I admit I've blundered… I don't know how but somehow I missed some of my absolute fave albums these last few... Tottenham Bluegrass Festival 2009
Fri, 03 Jul 2009 05:59:00 +0100A few weeks ago I stepped outside of my usual indie music snob comfort zone by attending an R&B show that featured some of the biggest names in Canadian soul music today. Obviously the broadening of my beard sportin' skinny jean wearin' surroundings proved beneficial in the sense that I enjoyed the show immensely, and it helped me to appreciate more fully the talent involved in urban music today. Well, last weekend, thanks to the kindness of a workmate of mine, I managed to engage myself in a little more musical boundary crossing when I attended the 26th Annual Tottenham Bluegrass Festival which took place at the Tottenham Conservation Area in the town of (you guessed it) Tottenham, Ontario. To be fair, the leap into bluegrass appreciation was much shorter than the aforementioned R their means of survival in many ways. I totally respected that. In fact, to be honest, it was a little bit difficult not to be somewhat envious of it. This festival has been consistently drawing bluegrass fans from all over North America and around the world for over 26 years now, and each year seems to be a little bit more successful than the one before. Although a wedding reception Saturday night would prevent me from spending the entire day at the fest, I enjoyed soaking in the sun and taking in the sounds of the bands that played that afternoon. When we arrived there, Tottenham's own Hometown Bluegrass band was just finishing off their set. This is a band that plays a classic style of bluegrass that pays homage to the pioneers of the genre. The instruments are all acoustic and traditional, and although all of the members are insanely talented, violinist Leslie Dawn Knowles seems to be their secret weapon of sorts, as is emphasized by her lightning quick style of fiddle playing. Even the vocals of Wayne Douglas sounded like something you'd hear cracklin' out of a late 40's Appalachian radio station. Personally, I would probably have to get in the proper mindset to listen to their music at home, but on the live stage, it's a real treat to watch such incredible talent. The next band to take the stage was The Dixie Flyers. This band has been an unstoppable force on the Canadian bluegrass scene since the early 70's, having reaped the praise of many bluegrass institutions including the original pioneer himself, Bill Monroe. Their experience was immediately noticeable as they took to the stage and performed with great confidence and zeal. The band looked like they were genuinely having a good time on stage as they kept the playing loose and somewhat improvisational, allowing the instrumental portions, in particular, to shine. If there was one complaint amongst me and my peers, it was that the sound mix on Al Widmeyer's dobro was a little too low for our liking. The dobro is such a prime instrument in the world of bluegrass that it would have been nice to be able to hear it a... (Read complete news)
Stuck On: ‘Sometimes It Be That Way’ by Jewel
Fri, 03 Jul 2009 00:01:00 +0100Maybe it's a song that came up on shuffle in iTunes, something from a movie or a tune your co-worker was whistling around the office. Or maybe it popped into your head for no reason at all. But now you find that song stuck in your head and stuck on repeat. Today I'm stuck on: "Sometimes [...]... (Read complete news)
