Canadian Music Centre's Song Repertoire Listings Available as Free Download
Thu, 02 Jul 2009 15:53:00 +0100As part of a continuing initiative to make Canadian music more accessible (and get it performed!), the Canadian Music Centre has made available a spreadsheet of its complete Canadian art song repertoire listings, which I am offering as a free download on my teaching site. The spreadsheet can be viewed with Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, and Open Office, as well as a number of other programs. Genre: Soundtrack: Compilation This is a superb compilation of music from Clint Eastwood's movies. Featuring highlights from Eastwood's movies, it travels from Eastwood's Rawhide to his later movies. The first half of the album features various composers such as Lalo Schifrin (Dirty Harry) and Erroll Garner (Play Misty For Me). Even Eastwood has his compositions thrown in from Unforgiven and Madison County among others. Some of the selections are from scores not released - Pale Rider, Tightrope and A Perfect World. Dirty Harry shines in the first half. It always will for me especially when Harry's creed is spoken before the theme plays. But it is the second half that is the special part of the album. This is a suite from an Eastwood documentary on PBS. As composed by Lennie Niehaus, it is beautiful and emotional, showing Niehaus' capability as a jazz musician. Niehaus uses the orchestra marvelously and there are even moments of big band jazz. The music captures the Eastwood personality perfectly. Eastwood is an alright composer. But Niehaus shines far more than Eastwood. Eastwood needs to step back from composing and let Niehaus take the reins again. If you think I exaggerate, then listen to An American Filmmaker Suite. You will be convinced. This compilation album is diverse and engaging. It will not only please any Eastwood fan, but score lovers as well.
