Guitars all up in your face.....
Mon, 29 Jun 2009 20:35:00 +0100"Diegrinder has the fuzzed out guitar driving power that Orange Goblin has behind them, but more of the hard-edged melodic vocal approach of Disengage, and I could easily see Diegrinder being sandwiched on a bill in between both of those bands. Pretty decent 5 song EP really, a good energy backing force throughout this CD from beginning to end, no doubt. The songs from these Michigan riffsters are all similar in writing s t y l e. All the songs are a rush of adrenaline, bordering on Punk rock, but the parts are more blues based, driving riff oriented guitars similar to Dozer or Unida, and once in a while a little tricky twist is thrown in to break in up a bit. You find yourself banging your head and singing along in the first couple of minutes...it's hard to deny these guys are good even if it is a little of the 'same-ole'. Well, Diegrinder has a little slop, but it's more of a soulful slop here and there...but really, they are a good tight unit and I dig it. Check these guys out if you are into Orange Goblin, Dozer, Camarosmith/Zeke or Disengage. It's not Metal, it's not Punk, it's definitely rock and roll, and that much I am sure of." Interview with Dark Castle
Sun, 28 Jun 2009 14:35:00 +0100Dark Castle are a stoner/doom duo from Saint Augustine, Florida. I recently had the chance to interview them to find out more. Dark Castle are: Stevie Floyd - Guitar, Vocals Rob Shaffer - Drums, Vocals, Synth MM-Who are your musical influences? We're into a lot of different types of music. As far as metal, some influences would be Death, Bathory, Yob, Neurosis. As far as 70s prog rock, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, King Crimson, Camel. We listen to a lot of multi-cultural world music types like middle eastern, Asian, Egyptian, African. Hip hop and classical too. MM-Tell us some about the history of your band. The band formed the day we met. Both of us had other music projects that we left behind to start something new. We both had similar interests and goals for a band. We originally both played guitar and had a drum machine, but then Rob decided to play drums. We wrote music and recorded a demo ourselves the first year 2006, and started playing shows and recorded our EP "Flight of Pegasus" which we self-released the second year 2007. We kept playing shows and made our own merch. We recorded a yet to be released song early 2008, then recorded "Spirited Migration" in spring and began touring outside of Florida, as well as began talking with At A Loss Recordings. In May 2009 "Spirited Migration" was released on At A Loss and we have been heavily touring all year. We've played close to 200 shows to date. MM-How would you describe your sound to someone who was not familiar with your music? "...a rupturing combination of doom wreckage and post-metal advancement...” - Decibel Magazine "Listening to the debut from this Florida duo is like walking through a lush valley while the sky before you turns black." - Alarm Magazine "sounds like Hiroshima but slower" - some guy MM-You released “Spirited Migration” in May. Tell us about it. We recorded "Spirited Migration" in Spring of 2008 with Phillip Cope from Kylesa at the Jam Room in Columbia, SC. The title of the album as well as the artwork refers to a spiritual journey, a path into a new perception and consciousness. Each of the song titles is a different step. Realizing the world of form is a dream and opening your eyes to the formless (Awake In Sleep). Breaking down past ways of thinking that have not worked, survival is threatened, and the need to adapt and change to evolve (Into The Past). Introducing the spiritual journey (Spirited Migration). Growing but fighting to become more aware (Growing Slowly). The journey is difficult but you persist (Weather The Storm). Perceiving a higher state of consciousness (Flight Beyond). Really feeling living things, and becoming a part of nature without labeling the circumstance or being. Finding the source. We belong to the land, the land does not belong to us (Grasping the Awe). The cycle of life, the man leaving the tree, going to the sea, dying and becoming part of the tree again, and the stillness behind all... (Read complete news)
Repost request from the c-box last week.....
Wed, 24 Jun 2009 20:42:00 +0100"Belgium's Cowboys and Aliens have been around now for a couple of years or so... I remember reviewing their debut CD in 2000, but I can't honestly say that thier first album really grabbed me like their most recent "Love Sex Volume" has... This CD is classic rock riff heavy, often reminding me of some of the progressive qualities of bands like Operator Generator or Spirit Caravan. The songs are all headbanging numbers that have driving tempos similar to Orange Goblin. The vocals are very melodic and strong and paint over the overdriven guitar textures nicely. It seems that Cowboys and Aliens have their own little formula for writing hard rock tunes- and is reflection in every song. Let's just say that they are definitely carving their own ideas out of classic rock. Great stuff if you are into bands like Unida, Orange Goblin, Nebula...Hard riff rock and good times seems to be the attitude taken on by Cowboys and Aliens...nothing wrong with that. File this one near Time Traveling Blues..." (stonerrock.com) Band Site: http://www.myspace.com/cowboysandaliens Cowboys & Aliens - Love, Sex, Volume: http://lix.in/-4ebce4 ... (Read complete news)
Riffs from Spain.......
Tue, 19 May 2009 18:51:00 +0100"On Amor Y Muerte En La Tercera Fase, the instrumental three-piece tries to bridge the gap between rock music and movie soundtracks by laying ambiance on top of rolling riffs and jazz-like playing. Think Stinking Lizaveta meets Zombi, without the keyboards, and you're on the right track." (review by Arzgarth@StonerRock.com). "They've got a great Goblin meets Sabbath thing going with a strong desert feel to it. Recommended for fans of the already mentioned Goblin, Mammatus, Earthless, Zombi and all things heavy and psychedelic." (review by Lähettänyt gull skull). Check em' out here: Cuzo. The Rant: Spider-Man Movies
Wed, 15 Aug 2007 01:02:00 +0100I can recall the first time I saw the trailer for Spider-Man in 2001. I was more than excited following the success of the X-Men movies. So I went in to see it opening day and I left disappointed. The Green Goblin looked like an idiot, there was too much crying and Kirsten Dunst is [...]... (Read complete news)
