SIMPLY SIX: Phoebe Sharp
Sat, 04 Jul 2009 05:07:00 +0100Phoebe Sharp is a singer/songwriter from Tennessee. 1. For many artists, they cite a defining moment for themselves when they knew they wanted to be a singer. For many it was the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, to another generation it was the Beatles’ appearance on Sullivan half a decade later. Is there such a defining moment for you? To be honest, I can't remember there being a specific defining moment where I suddenly decided that I wanted to be a singer. I definitely don't have such epic memories as watching Elvis or the Beatles for the first time. Music was just part of who I was from birth. It just came naturally. Although none of my family is musical, I for some reason had this overwhelming desire to create music. From about 3 or 4 years old I started to create little songs, granted they were certainly not grammy winners! I always wanted to create music, however I think the moment that I realized that being an artist was not just a dream but a very real possibility was when I met the band Pairadeux from Denver, Colorado in 2006. They taught me a lot about songwriting and helped me to record some of my songs. They also introduced me to the Kaua'i Music Festival in Kaua'i, Hawaii where I made some fantastic industry contacts and got introduced to my producer in Nashville, Cliff Downs. Another little fun fact that has always stuck with me may sound crazy, but my Mom got talked into seeing a psychic by her friends when I was only a little baby and the psychic told her that I would travel the world because of music. Quite the freaky coincidence that I am actually pursuing music! :) 2. When you’re not creating music what are you listening to? Who are some of your favorites? When I'm not creating music, I absolutely love to listen to the greats like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Eagles, and Michael Jackson. I also love some more current artists such as Ben's Brother, Sara Barielles, Coldplay, The Fray, Demi Lovato, and U2! I basically love any type of music so I listen to a lot bands, but it would take way too long to list them all! 3. What would you say is your greatest moment so far as an artist, either on record or live? I would say my greatest moment as an artist so far was not from performances, but actually happened just recently online. I have been getting a ton of support from fans on my myspace page and they have been sending out bulletins to their friends trying to spread the word. Just recently I discovered that two of my fans made videos telling people how much they loved my music and telling everyone to check it out! They are even making videos to my songs. I think that's the most rewarding moment as an artist to know that your music touches people and that they care... (Read complete news)

Thu, 02 Jul 2009 19:32:00 +0100There is a long-standing campaign, including online petitions, to bring Coldplay to Israel where they have a huge fanbase. Now Israeli radio sources (Good Morning Israel) are suggesting that they will be playing there for the first time in late September. If the rumours are true, the group will play in HAYARKON PARK, TEL AVIV, ON SEPTEMBER 30TH. New team at helm of Liverpool's Parr Street Studio where Coldplay recorded hits
Thu, 02 Jul 2009 19:18:00 +0100A WELL-known city recording studio has been taken over. Parr Street Studios is where Chris Martin wrote some of Coldplay’s biggest hits, including The Scientist, and has been used by everyone from Echo and the Bunnymen to Oasis and former owner Phil Collins over the years. Beatmatch Productions have taken over the space after the lease became available. Managing director George Tudor-Williams said: “We plan to get artists in and produce, engineer, mix and master their tracks, as well as organising live events.” Parr Street Studios is one of Liverpool’s music success stories. ... Brüno’s Original Ending Was Even Worse Than the Coldplay Song
Wed, 01 Jul 2009 22:35:00 +0100Photo: Getty Images Two weeks ago we learned that, at the suggestion of prominent Hollywood gays who were asked for input, _Brüno_'s planned ending was scrapped in favor of a — SPOILER! — mock charity song for gay rights featuring vocals from Elton John and Chris Martin. Now, Movieline has info on the movie's original resolution and, no matter how you feel about Coldplay, you'll probably be thankful for the change. Very spoiler-y details after the jump. In the version we saw last week, the movie's final act has Brüno and his assistant-boyfriend Lutz consummating their love with a kiss during an Arkansas cage-fighting match, then getting married before credits roll and the song begins. But according to writer-director Richard Day — who saw the film in February and was asked by Sacha Baron Cohen and director Larry Charles for his feedback — the earlier ending went something like this: "The cage-match kiss resulted in a violent attack on the couple. They then cut to a press event where they are announcing their marriage or plans to, I forget which. But the boyfriend is now drooling, seemingly brain-damaged, and in a wheelchair, played for laughs." So, yeah. We don't really find Chris Martin all that funny, but we think the filmmakers probably made a smart decision here. Bay Area radio music directors pick the hits
Wed, 01 Jul 2009 01:26:00 +0100The music business might be in trouble, but you can't tell by looking at Aaron Axelsen's desk. Every available surface in the Live 105 music director's office is covered with piles of advance CDs, industry journals, unopened promotional packages, assorted schwag, even a few recent record store purchases. "I've always been a music junkie," says Axelsen. "So I welcome the weekly avalanche of new music." ------------------------- IMAGES ------------------------- As the guy who decides what gets played on KITS-FM, the Bay Area's long-running alternative station, Axelsen has built a reputation for not only breaking blockbuster acts like Coldplay and Green Day, but also championing emerging and local artists with critical airplay. But how do Axelsen and his peers make it through the heaps of new tunes to find the few that are going to strike a chord with the Bay Area's diverse, discriminating radio listeners? We talked to three Bay Area music directors and asked them a few questions about the process of picking the hits, keeping the ratings up and cracking the next big thing. Here's what we found. AARON AXELSEN, MUSIC DIRECTOR, KITS-FM (LIVE 105) Q: HOW DOES A SONG GET ON THE AIR? A: I personally receive around 150 new CDs a week, not including new music that I actively seek out via record stores, blogs or music mags. What gets on the air simply comes down to new music that my program director, Dave Numme, and I feel best represents Live 105 and will resonate and react the most with our listeners. It's a combination of playing new music from the modern rock juggernauts, combined with new releases from passion bands and embracing the best of the new emerging acts. Many of the latter will be "baby bands" that we cultivate and showcase on our Sunday night new music show, "Soundcheck," before possibly ascending to our playlist. Q: WHAT ARTISTS GET THE MOST SPINS ON YOUR STATION? A: Some notable Live 105 staples and spin leaders include Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon, Offspring, Killers, Linkin Park, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Incubus, the Cure, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Silversun Pickups, Sublime and Smashing Pumpkins. Q: WHO IS YOUR PICK FOR THE BREAKOUT ACT OF 2009? A: I can't pick one, so, I'm going to go with my five new breakthrough picks: Cage the Elephant, who played our BFD concert this year; the Limousines, a local buzz band from San Jose; White Lies, my favorite new UK act; Miike Snow, whose leftfield track "Animal" could be the best song of the summer; and Middle Class Rut, a fantastic new Sacramento two-piece that remind me a bit of old Jane's Addiction. TRAVIS X. LOUGHRAN _Music director, KYLD (Wild 94.9) and KIOI (Star 101.3)_ Q: HOW DOES A SONG GET ON THE AIR? A: It's not a very scientific process, to be honest. On any given week I could listen to 20 new records - sometimes more, sometimes less. Listener feedback is what ultimately determines when a record... (Read complete news)
