Wed, 10 Jun 2009 15:32:00 +0100Once again, it’s WUSSY WEDNESDAY, and this week you can call me a wuss all you want, but I love this stuff. One of my favorite non-metal bands is The Cardigans. You may not have heard of them, but they’re best known for the song “Lovefool” from _Romeo + Juliet_ in the 1990’s, and if you’ve ever watched old MTV Cribs, you’ve probably also heard “My Favourite Game” from time to time. They’re one of the few bands from my childhood that I still actively listen to and like, so they get brownie points for that, but, The Cardigans aren’t really the most metal band out there… or so they want us to believe. _First Band on the Moon_ (the album with “Lovefool”) came out in 1996, so I was about 8 or 9 when I got it as a gift for a 100% on a spelling test. At the time, I didn’t really know much about Black Sabbath, so I didn’t know that their cover of “Iron Man” was in fact… a cover. Years later of course, I put the two together. As it may be, it seems that my favorite non-metal Swedish rockers have sort of a penchant for Black Sabbath because they also do a cover of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” on 1995’s _Life_ and a cover of “Changes” at live shows. Not the band you would expect to do such a thing, but the completely non-brutal way they redo these classics is freakin’ AWESOME. So really, maybe _I’m _just the... (Read complete news)
Independent Music: The Swedish Independent Music Empire
Sat, 30 May 2009 17:29:00 +0100When it comes to independent music, there are a lot of hotbeds of skill but Sweden isn't normally one you would naturally imagine. Unfortunately, the music history of that nation appears to start and end with Abba for a lot of individuals, but over the past decade or so, there have been a growing number [...]... Tue, 03 Feb 2009 06:20:00 +0100As I posted in the mother country (Relix/Jambands.com) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Phish and the Beastie Boys have been confirmed as headliners for the eighth annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. As previously reported, the four-day event will take place from June 11-14 in Manchester, TN. Other marquee acts scheduled to appear include industrial arena-rockers Nine Inch Nails, Talking Heads visionary David Byrne, indie/alt-country powerhouse Wilco, soul legend Al Green, rap icon Snoop Dogg, seminal country musician Merle Haggard and singer/songwriter Elvis Costello, who will deliver a rare solo set. Phish and Bruce Springsteen are... (Read complete news)
Laura Marling--Alas I Cannot Swim (2008)
Tue, 08 Jul 2008 15:33:00 +0100Artist-Laura Marling Album-Alas I Cannot Swim Release Date-Feb 11, 2008 Genre/Style-Alternative Singer/Songwriter Official site-http://www.lauramarling.com/ Myspace-http://www.myspace.com/lauramarling Review-Due to her youth (16 when she first hit Myspace, 17 when signed to an imprint of EMI, and 18 when her debut album came out), perky-cute looks and extremely British diction, singer/songwriter Laura Marling got a lot of comparisons to Lily Allen in her early buzz, but the quietly compelling Alas I Cannot Swim is not at all a frothy pop confection. A folk-tinged AAA pop record based on Marling's alluringly husky voice and graceful acoustic guitar, Alas I Cannot Swim would be more aptly compared to the likes of... (Read complete news)
