Solid rock from the Netherlands.....
Wed, 01 Jul 2009 05:27:00 +0100Thanx to Elefantom for this very rare album... "Solid Ground was formed in 1991 or 1992 by Jaro, Nils, Erik and Danny who all played in other bands before. After a few gigs here and there we recorded a demo at the Stilteloos studio with Daan v/d Elsken. We kept playing gigs in Holland and I vaguely remember winning some sort of price that gave us the oppertunity to record another demo. This was done at the A.M.P. studio's with again Daan in the drivers seat. Come to think of it, we also did 'Grote prijs van Nederland' (a Dutch battle of the bands), won the forerounds but got disqualified 'cause we didn't play 3 songs but did our own thing. 1 short and 1 long song. Fuck those idiots. What also bothers me is that we never have gotten a price for the band that has had the most broken bones. All of us were working in bars and well, sometimes you break a leg, an arm, a knee, a hand, an ankle, a foot, a finger, a rib or 2. Mind you, we never blamed the booze!! Anyways, Erik left the band and Marco took over bassduties and him being Italian, booked us a tour in Italy rightaway. Also played Switzerland I believe. Next thing to do was to record an album. We spent 3 days and nights at the Waterfront studio with Jacques de Haard, I now remember he remixed our second demo too, and then we went home to finish later (what we never did). Timeline is a little blurry here. We went to Scandanavia on tour. Might have very well been before the recordingsession too. We went a ridin' from town to town just to find gigs cancelled. Luckely, 1 outdoor festifal in Sweden (could also have been Norway) came through and paid for most of the damage. Rob Reiner should have been there! The moment we set foot on stage it started raining... So did we go back and finish the album? Of course not. Somebody broke something and by the time he was all healed up we went back on the road. First some shows in Italy, that went actually very well, were it not that we had the van from hell, then a rest (another way of saying gigs were cancelled) in Triest. Next stop Yugoslavia, don't remember the city, where we probably played our best show ever, I think that was also the time we got our Solid Ground t-shirts stolen 'cause some soldiers were wearing them to the front. Did we or did we not went to Switzerland after that? I don't remember. Coming home, Marco left the band. And in came Michael. We practised a lot, played some shows, recorded some new songs at the Arenasleepin studio, and focussed on making a great record. We went back to the Waterfrontstudio with Jacques, took our time, spend a lot of money, but recorded Ground Zero. After that we did some shows... (Read complete news)
Snow Day!
Tue, 16 Jun 2009 06:16:00 +0100WE'RE SNOWED IN, AND IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD, CITY CHOIR IS CANCELLED TONIGHT. WHATEVER SHALL I DO WITH ALL MY SPARE TIME? Well, I could build another snowperson. The first one didn't look too good: But then, I am an Aussie, so concessions must be made. I'm not used to all this white cold stuff that falls from the sky. Cooking eggs on the footpath - now _that_ I'm an expert at! Or I could just enjoy the scenery out the window. I see scenes like this, and imagine Father Christmas _(HE IS NOT "SANTA CLAUS" IN MY FAMILY, THANKYOU VERY MUCH!)_ to come shooting over the top of Stone Street in his sleigh. Or to at least cruise along Kaikorai Valley Road in a beat-up combi van with snow chains. On a more serious note, yes, City Choir is cancelled tonight. Yes, we have a rehearsal on Saturday morning instead, as I've just been informed by email. 10:00 to 12:30. Hmmm...that time slot is starting to feel a bit familiar! So tonight, I shall grab my copy of Handel and go over "My Heart Is Inditing" for a couple of hours until I NAIL every last note! Actually, I'll enjoy some of the gorgeous-smelling homemade shortbread I just baked, play a game or two of UP AND DOWN THE CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE, and have a hot bath with lots of bubbles. Then maybe do a bit of rehearsing if I feel like it. But if I told you I'm spending all evening rehearsing... (Read complete news)

Teaching Tip Tuesday - What a Classroom Teacher Expects from a Supply
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 12:13:00 +0100I am very honoured to be the guest columnist for Teaching Tip Tuesday! I hope I can live up to WitGirl’s fabulous column from last week. I suppose I should start off by introducing myself. My name is Elle, and I’ve known Chase for years: He and I went to teacher’s college together. I, with a fellow teacher friend, have a beloved (at least to us) blog entitled “The Complaint Department”. We’d be honoured if you’d have a read sometime. I’m actually writing to give the opposite perspective of last week’s entry. If you recall, WitGirl wrote about A Day in... (Read complete news)

Plain White T's Perform to Salve Students
Sun, 17 May 2009 03:44:00 +0100Media Credit: Angelina BerubeDave Tirio, guitarist of Plain White T's Media Credit: Angelina BerubeTirio, along with the rest of the Plain White T's, performed at Salve Regina April 18, 2009. Walking back to his tour bus, Dave Tirio apologized for not showering- the Boston Celtics/ Chicago Bulls game was on earlier in the day and preoccupied his time. Tirio, guitarist from Chicago-based band Plain White T's, enthusiastically explained how the Bulls basically handed the Celtics the win, but Paul Pierce blew the game, giving the Chicago Bulls the first win in the playoff series. Tirio then realized Salve Regina is in Rhode Island, which is close to Celtics headquarters and that the majority of students at their performance that night would probably be Celtics fans. On April 18, 2009, Plain White T's performed for Salve students as part of their "Three Part Harmony Tour." The shows on the tour are aimed to feel more personal and closer than past tours. Plain White T's found inspiration for the set-up of the show after seeing how well received acoustic sets for press went over. "For anyone who's seen us before, why go out not having headlined for a few years and give them the same old boring show and the same old look," Tirio said. "We felt like something needed to change to make it interesting." On the tour, this last week for the Plain White T's has been chaotic. Tom Higgenson, the lead singer, became sick and for the first time in 10 years, the... (Read complete news)
